Non-Testable and Testable Statements

  • Grades 9-12 | Lesson Plan

Overview

When expressing ourselves on social media or when speaking with friends, we sometimes feel pressure to present broad, conclusive statements that shut down the conversation and limit our potential to explore ideas. Including scientific thinking into our personal expression creates opportunities to clarify our thoughts, consider other viewpoints, and develop a more comprehensive understanding of the topic at hand. This lesson reduces the risks of speaking in unequivocal terms by providing a process for turning non-testable statements into testable ones, encouraging students to explore their ideas through collaborative discussion.
