Exploring Perspectives on Free Speech: Discussion Questions

  • Discussion Questions | Grades 9-12

Overview

How does disagreement support democracy? The current debates surrounding free speech and other topics have become heated and increasingly partisan, often producing a variety of strong opinions that oversimplify complex ideas and present people who hold other views as poorly informed or ill intentioned. This combative climate has made it difficult to express disagreement or alternative perspectives. But disagreement and the ability to consider other points of view are precisely what makes free speech such a valuable and necessary component of a functional democracy.
