Stories are powerful. Stories entertain, purvey morals, and help us define our reality. But what happens when we interact with people whose stories seem so different from our own?
This classroom resource pairs George Packer’s Four Americas with Yuval Noah Harari’s “Imagined Realities” to offer students an interesting springboard to discuss the role of storytelling in developing one’s self-concept, especially in relation to citizenship and national identity–and to consider what this implies about the choices we make. The resource includes a discussion activity for students to explore these concepts in the classroom as well as extensions to continue the conversation.
