Perspective-Taking Activity: NYC & the Rent Stabilization Debate

  • Activity | Grades 6-12

Overview

In today’s polarized environment, it has become difficult to express nuanced opinions, much less clarify why we hold them. Without the chance to explain, many of us feel misunderstood or unheard and seek the perceived safety of others who share our point of view. This is a challenge: which values do people identify with? Do we share the same sense of community? Is it possible to work together despite different outlooks?

To explore the value of considering multiple perspectives, Ryan Badolato (2024-25 Mill Teaching Fellow) created a highly engaging activity in which students are asked to step into the shoes of real New Yorkers to weigh in on the debate over rent stabilization.
